Currently businesses need to start RCS conversations. Consumers can reply to messages previously sent to reengage the business or can provide opt-in by texting into a short code/long code or providing their number and consent to a brand.
Google has started trialing some additional ways for consumers to initiate conversations.

Both Google and Apple have agreed to follow the industry approved RCS Universal Profile specs. In some cases, Google has added support for features, like encryption, that are not included in Universal Profile. As features are added to the Universal Profile Apple will support them as well.
However, it is likely that the look and feel of some features will be different on Apple and Android devices.

Opt-in is required before a business can send RCS messages to a customer. If opt-on has been collected for SMS, it is also applicable to the same program if it is switched to RCS. No additional consent or updates are required.
Note: Google requires that Opt-in and Opt-out are supported for all RCS agents, even if local carriers and regulations do not.

Yes. Like other messaging platforms there are restrictions on what can be sent by RCS for business communications. To learn more, read the latest Google Acceptable Use Policy that outlines the rules for RCS.
Additional restrictions may be implemented by individual carriers or based on laws and guidelines in different regions.

At a high level, RCS offers a richer messaging experience than SMS – and this includes its more robust security measures. This includes measures like encryption in transit (i.e., the encryption of data as it moves between a user’s device and services) and end-to-end encryption in some cases. This ensures that messages remain secure as they travel over networks.
RCS Business Messaging (also known as RBM) shares the same security framework as RCS, but RBM also includes an additional layer of protection focused on business verification, which helps establish trust between businesses and consumers. This verification process helps prevent spam and phishing attacks which are common in traditional SMS.

We expect carriers in most markets to sign agreements with Google enabling them to manage and monetize RCS traffic on their network.
In some cases, the carriers may be slow to adopt RCS or choose to not be involved, for these carriers, Google can enable Google Guest Cloud (GGC) so that people can send peer to peer RCS and Sinch and our customers can send RBM messages to customers on those carriers. Google Guest Cloud is only available on Android devices and is not supported on Apple devices.
