Short Message Service (SMS) is the telecommunications industry term for a text messages or short messages which are messages of up to 160 characters in length sent by smart phones, mobile phones or tablets. Messages of more than 160 characters can be sent, but these will be sent as multiple messages concatenated to appear as one message, for which you could be charged more.
Note: Once an SMS is concatenated, the SMS will be shortened, for example, 153 characters instead of 160.
SMS is a hugely popular method of communication and billions of messages are sent every day (source).
