Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a communication protocol between mobile telephone carriers and between phone and carriers, aiming at replacing SMS messages with messaging system that is richer than text and has branding and security built-in.

 

It is an IP-based messaging service provided through mobile network operators with rich messaging features similar to chat apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Viber, including:

  • live chat
  • sending high resolution photos and videos
  • group chat
  • tying indicators
  • read receipts.

Businesses can use RCS to send richer and more interactive messages to customers through their mobile phone's default messaging app. It's currently only available via Android but Apple announced in November 2023 that it would start supporting RBM in 2024.
